Local IT Expert Warns Arlington Small Businesses: “You Are a Target”
A recent presentation to the Arlington Chamber of Commerce urged local business owners to take cybersecurity and disaster preparedness seriously — before it’s too late.
Atanas Vasilev, Founder and CEO of ATIS-USA, Inc., delivered a practical, no-jargon session on business continuity, disaster recovery, and cybersecurity tailored specifically for small businesses. With over 20 years of experience working with companies of 1 to 200 employees, Vasilev’s core message was clear: “Small businesses are not too small to be targeted by cybercriminals.”
“Attacks are largely automated,” Vasilev told attendees. “Criminals scan thousands of businesses looking for vulnerabilities. Accept that you are a target, and act accordingly.”
The presentation covered three major threat categories facing small businesses today — hardware failures, human error, and cyber incidents — with a particular focus on ransomware. Vasilev noted that over 60% of small businesses struck by ransomware fail to fully recover, making preparation not just smart, but essential for survival.
To combat these threats, Vasilev outlined five foundational protections any business can implement immediately: strong, unique passwords managed through a password manager; multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all critical accounts; automatic software updates; secured Wi-Fi networks; and regular staff training. He emphasized that cybersecurity is not a one-time project but an ongoing discipline — and that criminals are opportunistic, meaning even basic hardening can push attackers to easier targets.
The session also introduced attendees to the industry-standard 3-2-1 backup rule — maintaining three copies of data, across two types of media, with one stored offsite — and explained key concepts like Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) in plain, relatable terms.
Vasilev illustrated what good preparation looks like in practice through a real-world case study: a 12-employee construction company that suffered a ransomware attack but recovered in just three hours with zero data loss and zero ransom paid, thanks to AI-powered detection, clean backups, and a documented disaster recovery plan.
He closed by urging attendees not to be overwhelmed. “Start small. Pick one thing and do it this week. Progress beats perfection.”
